The Loyalists had another lovely day in Belleisle this past Saturday for their annual tournament. We arrived and set up Fort Loyalist to protect us from the rain but early morning rain gave way to overcast skies and drizzle for the majority of the day – gorgeous rugby weather!
All the Loyalists bonded over watching “Sonic the Hedgehog” go for blazing, arm pumping breakaways.
Blake’s sideline quips were wittier as it got brighter out and small and mighty Chels Ellis blew everyone away with her ability to take down anyone who dared come her way. Some big hits got great responses from the crowd throughout the day (Owens, that’s you). Congratulations to our men's side (“not the Prop team” according to Joel) who went on to win the whole tournament with some patient, tough play. The crowd loved them.
Way to go, boys!
On the women’s side, what started the day looking like “Pretty good 15’s” (c/o Malcolm) turned into a smarter, more cohesive game where we had bright glimpses of what could arguably be said to look like 7’s by the end of things! We really came together as a team, ladies – well done.
I can't speak for the fellas, but on our side of things everyone was pretty gassed by the time we played our 6th game of the day, but we left it all on the field. On top of the long day of games, many of our girls donned the Woodstock jersey at some point to help them make up for being short players. Those extra tired legs were worth it when we saw how much difference just a couple of senior players from our roster could make for a young and promising team from upriver. We ended up losing a heartbreaker to Moncton in the final in sudden death overtime. Next time, Moncton. Next time.
Congratulations, everyone on great play and some great club camaraderie - it was a great day to be a Loyalist.
